Show Outfit Overwhelm? We’ve Got You Covered!

It is your first competition, and you have no idea what to wear! It can be a problem for experienced competitors as well, but it does get easier as you go. When you are planning for your next show, always check the show’s specific rules. Each competition type and organization carry different rules.

Formal vs. Informal Attire

Generally speaking, horse show attire can be divided into two categories: formal and informal. The rules surrounding formal attire are much stricter. You will find more flexibility in informal attire competitions.

Overall, formal attire competitions will spell out specific articles of clothing. Color, fit, and style will all be set. As a whole, the level of attire matches the level of competition. Beginner competitions will not demand expensive formalwear. However, as you climb in skill level, the attire expectation will also climb.

Cowboy Hat or Helmet

All competitions will mandate either a Cowboy hat or a helmet. Helmets can have plastic or felt covers. Moreover, you are not limited by color either. While not every color is available for helmets and Cowboy hats, you should have no problem finding one that matches every show outfit.

Footwear

The footwear you choose in the early days of competitions may be the exact footwear you wear for riding lessons. As long as the boots are clean, this route is an excellent choice. Black and dark brown are the traditional color choices for riding boots in competition. If you purchase a pair of boots specifically for showing, break them in before the show. Stiff, uncomfortable boots will hurt your feet after a long day of running around the showgrounds.

Clothing

Beginner Competition Clothing

Beginner riders can wear a long-sleeved Western full button, snap, or zipped shirt with a collar. Some competitions allow jeans with a belt with a buckle, while others mandate chaps or show pants. Make sure to check the regulations of the show you are attending. Your cowboy hat or helmet, gloves, and boots will complete your outfit.

Halter and In-Hand Classes

Most horse owners recommend conservative clothing for in-hand classes. Men should wear a western collar shirt with a tie or scarf, jeans, a western hat, boots, and a belt with a buckle. Women can wear a long-sleeved western top, jeans or show pants, a western hat, boots, and a belt with a buckle. Vests, jackets, or blazers can also be worn. You should coordinate the colors of your clothing with your horse.

Horsemanship Clothing

Chaps are recommended for horsemanship classes for both men and women. Men should wear a Western shirt, scarf, cowboy hat, boots, and a belt with a buckle. Women should wear a fitted western blouse with a collar, show pants, gloves, cowboy hat, boots, and a belt with a buckle.

Color Coordinating with Your Horse

Specific clothing colors highlight the colors in your horse’s coat or mane and tail. Here are a few popular color combinations for horses:

Black: Red, Royal Blue, Charcoal

Chestnut: French Blue, Brown, Forest Green

Dark Bay: Emerald green, Burgundy, Chocolate Brown

Grey: Burgundy, Silver Grey, Slate Blue
