Fall Outerwear Must-Haves for the Barn + Beyond

Horseback riding in the Fall is bittersweet. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery and cool temperatures before the cold weather arrives. One of the challenges of Fall and Winter riding is picking the proper clothing. Fall temperatures change quickly throughout the same day. The key to staying comfortable during these weather changes involves layers.

We’ve put together an equestrian’s outerwear guide to help you get through the Fall weather comfortably.

Layering Your Clothing

Layering is one of the most effective ways to stay comfortable. This secret has been known by backpackers and extreme hikers for years. Depending on the temperature, you can layer three different items and add or remove them. Before shopping for fall riding apparel, make sure you remember functionality. Long jackets without front and back zippers can hinder your movement in the saddle and around the barn.

Here are some of the layers we recommend for Fall weather!

Base Layers

Your base layer is the one closest to your skin. It needs to wick moisture away from your skin to keep you dry. Because of their excellent wicking properties, many base layers are made from thermal polyester or wool. Other than fabric, there are no limitations on your base layer. It can be a v-neck, crew-neck, or quarter zip. Base layers could also include pants, but layering pants might be too much during Fall weather.

Sweatshirts, Fleece, and Sweaters

The next layer is one of my favorites! Who doesn’t love a cozy sweater when it’s cool outside? This layer insulates, moves moisture away from your body, and regulates your temperature. Middle layers tend to give you the most warmth. Our Teddy Fleece Pullover is one of the most popular middle layers for spending time at the barn. The soft lining and fun color make it functional and fun. It’s stylish enough to wear outside the barn, too! If you want something a bit fancier for a night out, most horse lovers prefer our Vine & Love sweater

Depending on where you live, soft-shell jackets can be a middle layer. They are soft and flexible enough to be a middle layer without the bulk or weight of a heavier coat. We’ve found soft-shell jackets are perfect for the in-between months when you can’t wear a t-shirt but aren’t ready to pull out the winter jacket yet. The Cinch Sweater jacket combines all the benefits of a sweater and a jacket into a stylish and versatile zip-up.

Shackets have become very popular for their versatility and style. If you are looking for a shacket with a western flair, check out our Ladies Cinch Shacket. This structured jacket features faux leather piping and concho buttons for added interest.

Jackets

Last but not least, jackets make up the final layer. Jackets can provide some warmth but are more for protection against wind, rain, and snow. This protection keeps your middle and base layer dry so they can keep you warm and dry. There are many types of jackets, including raincoats, light jackets, mid-weight jackets, and parkas, and your selection will depend on the weather in your area.
